Outdoor industry cautions regarding re-opening
On Sunday 10th May the Prime Minister announced a relaxation in the amount and nature of outdoor exercise we may take from 13th May. This is great news for many in the outdoor industry and lovers of outdoor recreation, however some caveats apply:
- The relaxation in reality is only effective in England because existing rules for residents in Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales remain in force.
- There is concern that the countryside is not ready for a surge in visitors; social distancing will be a made a mockery of if hoards flock to key locations, therefore common sense says remain local
- Mountain rescue, coastguard and other emergency services are already stretched so again use common sense and avoid high risk activities.
Various outdoor bodies have released statements welcoming the opportunity to return outdoors but stressing the need to be sensible and avoid further spread of the disease and a tightening of the lockdown:
